The Idea

What do you know about Shanghai? Chinese food? Pollution? Overpopulation? I can answer for you: almost nothing. Neither do I, except some people who came back filled with wonder. What did this city offer to them that other occidental megalopolis couldn’t? What makes it so special?

I have so many questions but only one way to answer them all: Leave to Shanghai for almost two months this summer with my camera and do my best to make a documentary about my journey. Capture the truth and understand.

I want to lose myself in this huge city and let my camera lead me to new people, new places and new feelings. I’ll do my best to integrate myself to this whole unknown world.

Adventure calling, I need your help, you backers!

The Process

Well, as I told you before, I have no idea what to expect from this city. I have a Swiss friend of mine living there and that’s where I’ll start my documentary. The idea is to shoot as much as possible of my journey’s evolution.

I want to interact with as many people as I can, both locals and well established expats, because that will be the main point of my documentary: meeting people and let them show me the city through their eyes.

The Help

As I am only a student wanting to realize kind of a dreamed adventure and share it with all of you, I really need your help and your support! My first idea was to shoot with my Nikon D7000 dslr; but after discussing it with documentary film makers and my teacher, I definitely have to focus on a real camcorder if I want my shootings to be optimal: the Panasonic ag-ac90. It’s a professional, lightweight but extremely powerful camera. Ideal for documentary compared to a dslr which is really hard to use if you have to shoot something quick! Right now, I’m still missing 900chf to buy the camcorder which is 2100chf and that’s why I’m requesting your support.

Then, if the campaign is a real success, I’ll use the extra funds to get a Zoom H4n to capture the best possible sound, which would be the optimum!

The Rewards

Now, you must be thinking : «Ok, that sounds exciting but what would I get if I support your project?». Well, first, my ETERNAL gratitude!

Joke apart, I will create a blog before leaving to Shanghai and you’ll be able to follow my journey through it. You could even give me advices and ideas, meaning you would take part in it! The final idea is to organize a projection of the documentary in a cinema in Lausanne and one in Geneva too, if possible. Last but not least, you will obviously get a DVD of the documentary!
