This is what it's all about.
Photobook: DARKROOM BABY A monograph by Joshua Amissah
DARKROOM BABY is a visual narrative about coming of age — about growing into a world that is constantly changing: raw, tender, and full of contradictions. Between 2015 and 2025 and in between Winterthur, Zurich, Paris, London, Berlin and Paris Amissah used his analog camera to capture people, spaces, and moments that exist beyond the obvious: subcultures, borderlands, intimate encounters, quiet gestures amid the noise of life.
In grainy black and white and vivid color, Amissah explores the beauty of the unfinished. His images speak of belonging and loneliness, of bodies longing for closeness, of faces that hold both strength and fragility. They are a search for truth — not in perfection, but in what is unfiltered, painful, and tender.
DARKROOM BABY is a coming-of-age book, but also an archive of sensitivity. It looks back on a decade shaped by questions of identity, community, and the search for meaning within the chaos of everyday life. Amissah’s gaze is curious, compassionate, and unflinching — an invitation to see dirt not as a flaw, but as fertile ground for beauty.
Each photograph in this volume is a fragment of a larger story — about growing up, about seeing and being seen, about what remains when the light in the darkroom slowly fades.

My project is special because ...
What makes this project special is its honesty and intimacy. Each photograph captures quiet, in-between moments that often go unnoticed — fragments of everyday life that reveal something universal. This book isn’t just a collection of images; it’s a visual story about memory, solitude, and connection, told through my lens.

This is what I need backing for.
I’m producing an independent photography book that brings together my most personal and carefully curated images. To bring this project to life, I need your support to cover the essential production costs. Your backing will help fund the printing and production of the book, the work of a professional graphic designer to ensure a beautiful layout and flow, and color correction to make sure every photograph is printed exactly as intended.
Every contribution goes directly toward turning this project from digital files into a tangible, high-quality art book that you can hold, share, and keep — a true piece of independent photography made possible by a community of supporters.
