What it is about?

What is behind the Eco-park AMALAKA of Colombia?

With our Eco-Park in a region of peasants and indigenous communities in the Colombian southwest, affected for years by the armed conflict, we want to give an alternative for a family ecotourism, to generate resources that allow us to continue with the education of low-income children and young people in the Granja-Escuela AMALAKA.

  • At weekends, families can know an integral farm where we cultivate in an organic and clean way vegetables and other healthy food (jams, whole wholemeal bread, aromatic, etc.) and skin creams using medicinal plants of the region.

  • The packaging of the food will be reusable containers: who returns the glass bottle to the eco-store, will get an economic incentive in his/her next purchase.
  • Environment lovers can walk along the trail that will lead them toward the source of Cofre River and to the ornithological observatory where people can see different birds (Colombia is the most diverse country in species of birds).
  • Clean technology lovers will learn more about the functioning of solar energy, biodigestor or solar dryer.
  • Culinary lovers will get an exquisite and healthy diet in the restaurant/café.
  • Sport lovers can rent a bicycle to enjoy a BMX track.
  • Workshops in topics like ethnobotany and ancient wisdom, clean and organic farming in the country and in the city, dance therapy, building with giant bamboo (guadua), alternative pedagogy, handicrafts, art exhibition, literary gatherings, etc.

Who is behind this initiative? Behind the Granja-Escuela AMALAKA is a Swiss who has worked during 31 years in favor of inclusion of children and young people in environmental, cultural and alternative education topics: Ana María Fankhauser. She and the Granja-Escuela AMALAKA team are great believers in that the Eco-Park will represent a bridge for building a world more aware and fair, besides representing a place to enjoy between «old and young people».

What else is there to know?

To promote ecotourism and at the same time, a social meeting and exchange among different human beings, it is not so common in Colombia, where there is a notable gap between rural and urban areas.

The intention of relating people from different social conditions, means build a more peaceful Colombia.
