First Album

I’m Erika Spencer and I’m a singer-songwriter, usually en route with the piano, sometimes also with the guitar. My music lives in the world of Alternative Pop, with influences from Jazz, Folk and Chanson. I’m inspired by the irony and wit of Regina Spektor and by the depth and honesty of Joni Mitchell.

Right now, I’m in the process of producing my debut album «Go» with 10 original songs. The album is about departure - and all the fears, contradictions, and absurdities that come with it. In the last few years, I’ve performed a lot solo and in a duo; however, on the album, my songs are arranged with a full band sound.

Getting unblocked

I’ve been writing songs since I was about 10 years old. And I’ve had enough songs for an album for a long time. But after finishing my studies as a jazz pianist, there was a time where I felt creatively blocked and withdrew from songwriting – I even wondered if I’d maybe lost my connection and access to it.

One day, I had a chance encounter: I met a man who could neither sit nor stand still for long periods of time (he’d drop to the floor regularly to do pushups during our conversation) and he asked me if I really want to spend my life hesitating and letting life pass me by. Something about the way he asked me made me realise: I don’t want that.

So I decided to finally deal with all the things that had been blocking me for the past few years – all the doubts, the insecurities, the hesitation. That’s how I realised that you can be afraid and still take the next step; because fear and courage aren’t mutually exclusive, they exist in a symbiotic relationship with one another.

Besides a lot of love, time, and energy, an album production also requires a fair amount of money – for example for the studio time, to pay the producer and musicians, for mixing and mastering, for photos and artwork, for promotion and to press the physical CD.
