13 settings of Goethe’s Erlkönig on one album.
Goethe’s Erlkönig is one of the most famous poems ever written, and countless composers have created remarkable songs from this extraordinary text. We all know Schubert’s Erlkönig — some may also know the versions by Carl Loewe or Carl Zelter.
But Émile Mathieu? Corona Schröter? Ludwig van Beethoven? Emilie Mayer? Carl Czerny? Stefan Schulzki?
They — and many others — also took on this text. Pianist Doriana Tchakarova has searched through libraries and archives and examined most of the roughly forty existing settings. Thirteen of the most compelling ones will soon be available on our new album.
A true treasure trove.
Many of the thirteen settings we selected have never been recorded before. And because we were able to work in the Pianosalon Christophori in Berlin, we could choose the right instrument for each song.
The result is a wonderfully varied sound world — each piece becomes its own universe.
