A sound and poetic installation
Wooden apparatus of different sizes and hights, are spread throughout the space, evoking some primal landscape, rustling with faint whispers, humming synthetic chirping and deep rumbles. Getting closer, one can look at what seems to be maps of unknown territories, far away, from another time or another solar system. Pieces of texts too, remains of sensations and thoughts of an explorer, whose voice sometimes emerges from the soundscapes. Some stones, probably brought back from those other places, mark the way. All those artefacts of territories, as if unearthed from a timeless dig, offer a place to constantly explore, alone or not.
Inhabited Silences are a sound and poetic installation designed by Simon Cacheux and Pauline Jupin, that will be exhibited at the LiteratureXchange festival in Aarhus in June 2019. It is an art installation realized in situ, that deals with imaginary soundscapes created on location during a short residency before the festival. A collection of poems is attached to the installation, and fragments of texts will be picked up in it and matched with each soundscapes.
At the beginning
This project is the continuity of a series of radio creations (Inhabited Spaces), a selection of which has been broadcast on Radiophrenia (an ephemeral artistic radio station from Glasgow) in September 2017. After this success, the desire to bring on Pauline Jupin and her texts, and also a voice, took shape. The LiteratureXchange festival in Aarhus will witness the realization of the Inhabited Silences, and the opportunity to meet a public. The stakes are high and the future of the installation lies within this festival.
This is what we need backing for.
Your support is at the core of a successful installation. By supporting us, you take part in the production of the work (audio systems for broadcasting the sound, printing of the maps and the texts, building of the wooden apparatus, and so on). The goal is to produce reusable parts, to allow the exhibition of the installation later on. We made tryouts and prototypes in order to design displays that would be as simple as possible to assemble, with multiple uses, not too expensive and easy to transport. The sound systems will be in various shape : headphones for a better phonic isolation, clusters of speakers to evoke another kind of fauna, etc. In every case, an audio player, an amplifier and a broadcast system will be needed. We want to maximize the use of second hand parts, but some expense are unavoidable. Indeed, if the parts are not second hand, we would like to buy lasting equipment and be able to use them for a long time.
