Learn to embrace your mental well-being
My name is Shaian Mendez, born on the 23rd of November 1998 in Bern Switzerland. Viewing Mental Health through my privileged eyes, as a Nurse working for a reputable Psychiatric University Hospital in Switzerland, have learnt that access to early preventive measures, and communal support, makes all the difference. Here is where you can also make a difference in assisting to executing this pilot project in Corozal (Belize) focused on providing the urgent needs to improve the social wellbeing of a community and all lacking resources to Mental Health Care.
A growing global challenge
Picking up the pieces pre 1990, from what was a institutionalize single housing care hospital for the severely ill. Today we are confronted with a communal strategy integrated into the general Healthcare system. Where it is not prioritized due to lack of resources ( qualified personel and finance) except for escalated cases.
This phase contributed to the present situation where the individuals were and are set to wander freely within the communities with no liaison or focal point which offers needed assistance/ therapy. The colonial approach is still vivid, where confinement is the only offered assistance. The aim of my project (HowUFeel) is to take on the challenges of raising awareness and offering counselling in the communities (schools, hospitals, security agencies, community center) .
It came to my attention that due to the growing demands of the society we live in, the ability to deal with the everyday emotional stress has reached alarming levels. It is no news, that some seek comfort in diverse substance abuse and uncontrolled anger outburst. This has contributed to an increase in domestic violence and security breaches in the public.
It would be welcomed to find a cure, but being realistic the aim of raising awareness within the family and community is focused on prevention and creating a more secure environment and a mutual emotional relationship for families.
