Water for Yanti's Village

by Tim Elsener and Anouk Meyer

A cyclone flooded my friend Yanti's village in Sumatra. 200 families need clean water for one more month. A small amount for us is half a fortune for them. Help me get them water.

The situation

I met Yanti as a manager of a diving center. We have known each other for a while and are good friends. Her family hosted me in Indonesia for over a month.

On November 26, Cyclone Senyar flooded her village in Sumatra. Almost all houses were destroyed or badly damaged. Eleven houses were swept away completely.

Yanti’s mother Reben, was alone on the second floor in her house during the flood. It took until dawn for neighbors to reach her using car tires and oil cans. She spent the following weeks in the improvised refugee camp of the village. Luckily, all people of the village survived, but many lost everything.

The Indonesian government declined international help for political reasons and did not declare this a national emergency. Support is minimal. Tents were only distributed after a presidential visit. They are largely on their own.

Almost a month later, the water supply is still destroyed. 200 families need clean water delivered by truck. One tank costs ~131 CHF and lasts four days. They cannot afford it. Not to mention other supplies like rice, medicine, and mattresses.

How the money reaches them

The money donated will go directly to Yanti’s bank account in Indonesia, transferred with Wise. No organization in between. No overhead. No middlemen. Ordering water is a phone call away.

Yanti and her brother Donny coordinate distribution on the ground and ensure the funds are used effectively. They do this as volunteers. This is about helping 200 families, not one person.

They will keep me up to date how the money is being used. I will share weekly updates with pictures.

How the money will be used

The water supply will take approximately one more month to restore. Here is exactly what your support provides:

Water (Primary Need)

  • 1 water tank (7,000L) = IDR 2,800,000 (~132 CHF)
  • Lasts 4 days for the community
  • 8 tanks = 1 full month = ~1056 CHF

Goal: 1,100 CHF = One month of water for 200 families

If we exceed the goal: Funds beyond 1,100 CHF will support food, medicine, and building materials:

  • Rice 5kg = IDR 85,000 (~4 CHF)
  • Basic medicine kit = IDR 100,000 (~5 CHF)
  • Mattress = IDR 300,000 (~15 CHF)

If neighboring villages also still need water - water will be ordered for them first.

(Exchange rate: 1 CHF = ~20,673 IDR)
