Facilitated access to drinking water for a population in serious difficulty and awareness raising on the adoption of good practices in the approach to water (use, storage and consumption) and in hygiene and health matters.
In 2012, CEU funded the drilling of a water well at a depth of 150 m near the village of Marougoune, in the municipality of Oulampane (department of Bignona), followed by the construction of a water castle powered by a solar-powered pump.
The work was carried out with the direct participation of the local population
The water system has given the inhabitants of five rural villages (about 3,000 people) access to high-quality drinking water.
In 2019, CEU promoted a study to verify whether the water system has brought concrete improvements to children’s health. The study yielded excellent results, the incidence of diarrhea in the population benefiting from the Marougoune water system has drastically decreased. In 2021, CEU upgraded the solar system by installing 57 new photovoltaic panels, installing a more efficient solar pump, disinfecting the network and the suspended tank, and training the maintenance worker.
Now, CEU intends to extend the water network to four more rural communities and to the neighborhood of one of the villages already connected previously
The results of the study
The survey yielded excellent results, the incidence of diarrhea among the population benefiting from the Marougoune water plant has drastically decreased: 42% reduction in the number of families affected by diarrhea (from 67% to 39%) 61% reduction in the number of people affected by diarrhea (from 18% to 7%) 77% reduction in the number of children aged < 5 years affected by diarrhea (from 45% to 10%)
