How art is preserved?

An archive does not only preserve memory. It shapes what gets remembered, and who gets to see it.

For a long time, I have been thinking about perception, interpretation, and about how culture is not only created, but also preserved, represented, and passed on. Every culture has its art, and every culture has its own ways of showing it, encouraging it, collecting it, and remembering it. These processes matter because they shape not only what is visible now, but also what remains visible in the future.

This project grows out of that thought.

Who can access art?

In my research, I became more and more interested in archives and in the question of access: how cultural material is structured, how it is communicated, and why some forms of art feel open to one person and intimidating to another. I realised quite quickly that there is no simple formula for this. The way art is represented is never neutral. It can invite people in, but it can also quietly tell them that this space is not for them.

That is why I decided to develop a publication based on a Basel-based archive artistic material. It is my attempt to translate archival material into a printed form that feels more open, more engaging, and more welcoming. I do not want to simplify the material, but I want to create another point of entry into it: through editorial decisions, image selection, rhythm, structure, and care. A publication that gives visibility to artists, and that allows more people to feel addressed by the world of art and creativity.

What do I need your support for?

Your contribution helps me carry this project from research and design into a real physical form.

It supports the final editorial work, image preparation, printing, binding, and the production of the first books and postcards, as well as the practical costs that come with sending them out into the world.

This is a small and very personal project, developed with a lot of care. Your support helps me realise it properly and bring this first volume into being.

Thank you!
