GER Wie viele von Ihnen wahrscheinlich auch, hat auch uns die spezielle Situation auf Trab gehalten. Vieles ist ganz anderes gekommen, als vor zwei Jahren noch geplant. Das hat Rui und mich auf neue Pfade geführt, die sich voneinander entfernt haben.

In den untenstehenden Zeilen beschreibt Rui, wie es auf unserer Fläche weitergegangen ist, und wo ihn das Leben hin gespült hat: «Unsere Versuchsfläche in Mértola ist nun, wie wir erwartet hatten, selbsttragend. Nachdem wir einige Pflanzen eingeführt haben, die in diesem System fehlten, wird sich die Natur darum kümmern, indem sie das auswählt, was zu diesem Zeitpunkt dort sein sollte. Wir haben gelernt, dass dieses System einen Neustart braucht und noch nicht in der Lage ist, Lebensraum für Bäume zu bieten. Die Weiden sind in einem einiges besseren Zustand, aber für das Gedeihen von Bäumen fehlen noch die entsprechenden Grundvoraussetzungen. Dieses Ökosystem braucht mehr Zeit, um sich zu erholen und sich selbst zu strukturieren, indem alle Waldschichten nacheinander wachsen, beginnend mit den Pionierpflanzen. Jetzt wird die Natur die Antworten geben, wenn sie dazu bereit ist, und der Mensch sie machen lässt. In der Zwischenzeit hat mich dieses Lernen an einen neuen Ort gebracht, wo die Bedingungen etwas einfacher sind. Hier ist das System noch nicht ganz so degradiert. Dennoch sind auch hier die Auswirkungen der klimatischen Veränderungen sowie die Misswirtschaft durch den Menschen spür- und sichtbar. Durch jahrelanges Pflügen und brutale Forstwirtschaft hat sich der Zustand des Bodens von Jahr zu Jahr verschlechtert. Jetzt nehme ich mir die Zeit, dieses 100 ha große Gebiet mit Eichen- und Eukalyptusplantagen, das jedoch ein großes Potenzial für den Schutz von Wildtieren bietet, zu beobachten und eine Diagnose über den gesamten Jahreszyklus zu erstellen. Nichtsdestotrotz haben ich bereits eine Pilotfläche mit der Aussaat einer mehrjährigen Weide begonnen, die die Bedingungen auf 6 Hektar einer stark degradierten Eichenplantage verbessern wird. Diese Weide wird mir zeigen, wie das System reagiert und was die nächsten Schritte für die Regeneration eines autochthonen mediterranen Waldes sein sollten. An dieser Stelle kann ich Ihnen nur für Ihre Unterstützung auf unserer letzten Pilotfläche danken. Damit konnte ich vor Ort bleiben, meine Arbeit und Beobachtungen weiterführen und ich habe viele Erkenntnisse daraus gewonnen, die ich nun in dieser neuen Phase meiner Regenerationsbemühungen nutzen kann.»

Ich freue mich sehr, dass Rui seine so wichtige Arbeit im Bereich der Regeneration weiterhin ausübt. Auch ich bedanke mich nochmals ganz herzliche für Ihre Unterstützung.

Da das Reisen in andere Länder auch schon einfacher war, habe ich meinen Fokus im Bereich des Wassermanagements etwas verlegt.

ENG Like many of you, the special situation has kept us on our toes. Many things have turned out very differently from what we had planned two years ago. This has led Rui and I down new paths that have that have diverged.

In the lines below, Rui describes how things have progressed on these plot, and where life has flushed him: «Our experimental plot in Mértola is now self-sustaining, as we expected. After we introduced some plants that were missing in this system, nature will take care of it by selecting what should be there at that time. We have learned that this system needs a reboot and is not yet able to provide habitat for trees. The pastures are in a much better condition, but the basic conditions for trees to thrive are still missing. This ecosystem needs more time to recover and structure itself by growing all forest layers one after the other, starting with the pioneer plants. Now nature will give the answers when it is ready and man will let it do so. In the meantime, this learning has taken me to a new place where conditions are a little easier. Here the system is not yet quite so degraded. Nevertheless, the effects of climatic changes as well as human mismanagement are felt and visible here too. Through years of ploughing and brutal forestry, the condition of the soil has deteriorated from year to year. Now I take the time to observe this 100 ha area of oak and eucalyptus plantations, which nevertheless offers great potential for wildlife conservation, and to make a diagnosis over the entire annual cycle. Nevertheless, I have already started a pilot area with the sowing of a perennial pasture that will improve conditions on 6 hectares of a heavily degraded oak plantation. This pasture will show me how the system reacts and what the next steps should be for the regeneration of an autochthonous Mediterranean forest. At this point I can only thank you for your support on our last pilot plot. It allowed me to stay on site, continue my work and observations, and I gained a lot of knowledge from it that I can now use in this new phase of my regeneration efforts.»

I am very pleased that Rui continues to carry out his so important work in the field of regeneration. I also thank you again very much for your support.

As travelling to other countries has also been easier, I have shifted my focus somewhat in the area of water management.

ENG After the successful completion of the CrowdFunding and the well-deserved break, we are now starting to organize the rewards, and thanks to your support Rui can now continue to take care and nurture our first trial area until the next planting season. We think the best way to show our gratitude is to make sure the trees survive this summer and prepare for next steps.

The summer arrived in full strength! Already 37ºC today.

We are almost done with our crowdfunding, but we still have a big margin until we reach our second objective. Please keep on sharing this project with as many people as you can.

In the mean while, our preparations are still going on, so our pilot areas keep developing during the summer. This week, taking advantage of the last rains from last week, we planted Prickly-Pear and Sudan Grass. Both very resistant species to warm and dry climates. And we will have nice and fresh fruits soon! Thank you all for your help!

The summer is here already. This week we are already on the 30ºC. By the weekend the forecast says it will reach 36ºC. Last week it wasn’t even 20ºC and rained. This is how the weather is in Mértola, winter yesterday, hell today. This is why our dedication to this plants will be so important during the next months. Up to now our efforts are working. We can see some difference already. Let’s keep on working!! thank you all for your support.
