This is what it's all about.
With fome books, we want to open a small, curated bookstore in the center of Willisau – at Postplatz. The name «fome» comes from the Ghanaian language Ewe and means family – and, in a broader sense, community. Who we are – and why this store is more than a business We are Anja and Sandra Glover – mother and daughter. I (Anja) am an author and sociologist. Through my book, I have experienced how powerful stories can be – especially those that have long been denied space. My mother Sandra has worked her entire life – organizing, carrying, enabling. In our family, for generations, women have stood in the background, accomplishing extraordinary things – often quietly, often invisibly. They made sure other projects succeeded. That other people’s dreams came true. I am the first generation that can truly pursue what she desires. And I can only do so because I stand on the shoulders of these women. One of those women is my mum. At the end of her professional career, the patriarchal system once again made it very clear where her place was supposed to be. She did not accept it. Despite a difficult situation, she chose to leave. Now it is time. Time for her to open a store – the way she wants to. The way her own mother once wished to. That is why fome books is not just a bookstore. It is a place for stories that otherwise would not find space. For those who are far too often unheard.

Yes, right now: At a time when many local places are disappearing, we want to create a space where books, people, and conversations come together. A bookstore with carefully selected fiction, children’s books, Swiss authors, and occasional readings. Complemented by small events, encounters, and your ideas.

With this crowdfunding campaign, we are not only asking a financial question. We are asking a community question. Does Willisau want a place for books, conversations, and encounters? A space for children, for readings, for book clubs, for exchange? You can support us not only financially. It will show us – and Willisau – whether this place is truly supported by the community.
