Who are we?
We are «GINMAKU Japanese Film Festival» based in Zurich, Switzerland!
For the upcoming 6th edition, 16 films are planned to be screened. We started our festival in 2014 and this year will be the big celebration after 3 years of pandemic break.
«GINMAKU» means «silver screen», a title chosen out of reverence to the great pioneers of Japanese film. Without their passion, the Japanese film industry wouldn’t exist the way it does today.
The festival will showcase new and upcoming Japanese films and filmmakers, presenting the Swiss community with cinematic impressions of contemporary Japan and creating a cultural bridge between the nations.
What is our goal for GINMAKU 2023?
It is our mission to build a long term cultural bridge between Switzerland and Japan. Through our film festival, we create opportunities to establish deeper friendship and mutual understanding.
Thanks to the many requests from our audience, our next edition was planed to be taken place in a larger cinema in Zurich. Unfortunately, this was no longer possible due to an unexpected bankruptcy of the cinema back in December 2022 and all the preparation was gone.
After some back and forth, we were welcomed back by cinema Riffraff and Houdini and are therefore very honoured and grateful.
What do we need your support for?
Your contribution is provided for the screening fees and shipping cost of films as well as the printing costs of programmes and posters.
Together with our cinema partners, we aim to uncover new talent in the Japanese film industry through this festival, develop and grow together, and promote the cultural exchange between Switzerland and Japan.
