What has happened up until now:

I am Thomas Rappaport, sculptor of wood and Landart artist. I started my «Art Climate Journey» «Global Raft» seven years ago. An archaic «Kugelfloß» made of tree stumps, with a diameter of 4 meters and a free moving ball of wood in the middle travels along the rivers Neckar and Rhine from Stuttgart via Cologne to Rotterdam.

The future project – a project for everyone

I want to create two rafts in the glacial lagoon west of Jökulsárlón in Iceland as part of a spectacular nature-art-performance. One of the rafts will consist of a wooden disk with an ice sphere and the other raft will consist of a disk sawn from ice with a wooden sphere. The people of Iceland and anyone else who is interested is invited to accompany me when the two rafts which are 4 meters in diameter are placed in the sea. These two large rafts are to be accompanied by hundreds of miniature «Kugelflöße» made of ice, each of which carries tree seeds. This is to symbolize the global circulation!

Global climate circulation is a worldwide art project. Landscape is a part of and the location of my art, wood and water are my material. Water is boundless. Water builds a constant global circulation and yet water changes constantly – an ever changing «material» of art.

The log book

On its journey down the Rhine, the «KugelFloß 2010» stopped at the sculpture park in Cologne. In 2013 it continued to the Netherlands to the «Havenmuseum» in Rotterdam where it remained until 2014. In 2015 as «artist in residence» in SIM (Samband islenskra Myndlistarmanna) in Reykjavik, I managed to inspire the people of Iceland. My project and my art work were displayed at the Radisson BLU Reykjavik and in the Iceland Forest Service. Exhibitions in Hrnafjördur Art Museum Höfn, at the Culture Night in Reykjavk and at the harbor in Stuttgart are planned for 2016. The «ClimateArtJourney» is followed by ever more people in the social media.

How it all started

While working as a sculptor of wood I often have a small piece of wood in my mouth. One of these pieces of wood fell once in a stream and as I watched it flow away, it occurred to me that it could travel along the waterways all the way to the North Sea. From there I considered old traditional wooden rafts which still inspire me. A miniature raft made of ice carries the seed of a tree to its place of germination. This idea could change reality in the hands of many people.

What happens with the money?

  • Repair work of the raft. The presence of the «KugelFloß» at the Havenmuseum Rotterdam left its mark. The platform made of black forest pine wood has to be repaired. Old trees from the rivers of Siberia drift onto the north cost of Iceland after a ten to fifteen year journey. I would like to make the repairs using this drift wood with its long history.
  • Transport and insurance of all concerned and their equipment including material, film crew and helpers. This includes e.g. transportation, a four-wheel-drive vehicle which is suitable for transportation of wood and a small refrigerator for the transport of miniature ice rafts. Development and construction costs of silicon molds. Hundreds of miniature ice rafts are to be released from the Icelandic coast. In order to fabricate the small ice rafts, multiple silicon forms must be made. The supporters of the project, that means you, should also receive such a form. You can produce your own «KugelEisfloß» that will carry tree seeds and can be released in an area of water of your choice on their «Climate Art Journey». This will require a large number of forms.

How much money is still needed?

The estimated costs for this project are Euro 16.000,–. I have managed to raise almost half of this sum, Euro 7.500-, from sponsors and supporters. To make this project a success I need another Euro 8.500,–

I would like to thank you!

Thank you for your interest in the Art Climate Project – the more people who take part, the more meaningful it becomes.

The initiators are Rappaport and his team.

I live in Stuttgart and work all over Europe as a sculptor of wood and Landart artist. I was in born in Zurich and after my Abitur I served an apprenticeship as a sculptor of wood. I then went on to study sculpting at the «Freie Hochschule Stuttgart. In addition to my work as a teacher of art and handicrafts, I have worked on free Landart projects since the solar eclipse of 1999. I have been an independent artist since 2008. I formed a voluntary team of supporters in 2015 for the Global Raft project in Iceland.
