CD project «Luca Marenzio: il pastor fido»
The ensemble «La Pedrina» dedicates its first CD project to the rediscovery of musical treasure troves within Switzerland. We will perform and record Luca Marenzio’s settings of passages from the «Pastor Fido», a well-known pastoral comedy by the Italian Renaissance writer Battista Guarini. Its source is in the municipal archive of Zuoz within a collection of «Madrigali a cinque voci» by Luca Marenzio, printed in Antwerp in 1632. A special feature of this edition is the fact that the traditional a cappella scoring of the Renaissance era was adapted to the baroque taste: the publisher printed a basso continuo voice not foreseen by the composer, but added later. In this recording, Pedrini, the artistic director of La Pedrina, realises the accompaniment with bass instruments suggested by the 1632 source. This unique project is scientifically supported by RISM Switzerland and by the «Marenzio Project», based in the USA and, of course, all this would not have been possible without the help of the Zuoz town council. A concert with the madrigals of Marenzio’s «Pastor Fido» will take place on Sunday, 25 June 2017, 16.30 hrs, in the church of Zurich-Oberstrass and on Saturday, 1 July 2017, 20.00 hrs, in the church of San Luzi in Zuoz.
Why we need your help
The CD will be released in 2018 by the Claves label in Lausanne, a traditional Swiss label with a large catalogue in the Early Music section. In the realisation of this unique CD recording, we have already secured the support of two important partners: The Istituto Italiano di Cultura takes over the cost of the harpsichord rent and tuning, and RISM Switzerland the fee of the sound master. The church community of Zurich-Oberstrass generously provides the church for the recording sessions free of charge. There are still important items left open: the musician’s fees for the four days of the recording, their travel and accomodation costs, the design of the CD booklet… As you can see, any support in covering the cost of this important project is more than welcome!
