Samuel is 24 years old and autistic. He lives a self-determined life in his own apartment – this lifestyle is currently rarely chosen in Switzerland, making financing it uncharted territory.

Who is Samuel

Samuel is a cheerful and upbeat 24-year-old man diagnosed with fragile X syndrome and an autism spectrum disorder. Despite the challenges his life brings, he shares the same dreams as many others his age: he wants to live independently, make his own decisions and contribute to the community in a meaningful way through his work. He is currently learning to run his own household, do the shopping, cook, attend appointments independently, maintain his social life, invite friends round and pursue his hobbies such as playing the drums or cycling or practising snowshoeing so that he can go up an alpine pasture with friends.

Together with an assistant, Samuel has started a new project in which he helps people with manual labour - whether it’s assembling furniture, gardening, clearing snow from paths or forecourts or doing other practical tasks such as moving house or running small errands. In doing so, he is following his passion for helping and actively contributing to the community with this unpaid help.

I need support for this

Samuel’s self-determined lifestyle with outpatient care is the form of living he has chosen. The financing of assistance in this form of living has not yet been fully clarified. The IV assistance contribution and health insurance benefits are only a contribution to the actual costs.

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (signed by Switzerland in 2014) is now being implemented in Switzerland, slightly differently in each canton and at a different time. As a result, we do not yet know to what extent the canton of Glarus will support Samuel’s outpatient care and whether it will do so at all in the future, although the total costs of a place for Samuel to live in an institution are considerably higher than those of his chosen form of living. In addition, he can benefit more from this outpatient form of living, as he receives daily support and can be cared for on a 1:1 basis.

Your contribution will support Samuel in his position as a pioneer and in the continuation of his chosen lifestyle. Specifically, your support will be used to cover uncovered wage costs and to secure Samuel’s employment.

In June 2024, the Federal Supreme Court ruled that the health insurer must cover medically prescribed basic psychiatric care services from the basic insurance in outpatient assisted living. These have been professionally supervised and provided by the team since 2022, but the health insurer refuses to provide any benefits due to
