Sere Serpe is:
Gizem Şimşek // Vocals, Bird Flute
Christian Moser // Oud, Cümbüş, Electronics
Lucio Marelli // Drums, Percussion
Sere Serpe draws from the richness of the traditional Turkish songbook, mixing it with the playfulness of jazz, the freedom of improvisation and with the altering effect of electronics, to create timeless music. Without negating the roots of these archaic traditional melodies, the three musicians dare to give voice to their different origins, creating a field of suspense with great enjoyment in playing and a sensitivity for their sound. Depth, humor, abstraction, virtuosity and moderation have equally found their place in the music of Sere Serpe.
What do we aim to achieve with our music? This is our focus:
For this album we’ve created a programme inspired by the melodies, lyrics, stories and anecdotes of the Turkish, Armenian, Georgian and Laz languages. Through our heritage and years of involvement with these cultures, we’ve gained a deep understanding that we’ve responsibly, personally and artistically incorporated into our music.
Freedom for playfulness, space for group improvisation, responsiveness to fellow musicians, the audience and the environment are important principles for us. Our arrangements and compositions are influenced by text, imagination and the present moment, as well as meticulously crafted melodies. Every instrument, including the vocals, can play both accompanying and solo roles. When and how these decisions are made is left to the moment. This approach keeps our music fresh, leaves room for risks and surprises, and allows it to sound a little different every time.
Sere Serpe stands for diversity, a conscious approach to cultural heritage, flat hierarchies and lots of joy as well as melancholy.
