Replace a diesel generator with solar panels
We are looking for CHF 10’000.- to install solar panels on a school in the Dominican Republic (10’000.- are already financed).
Since 2004, a school of tourism offers free professional courses to the inhabitants of the Dominican Republic. Since 2008, the school is financially independent. She offered 924 diplomas to young people in 2017.
With your help, we want to offer them their energy autonomy by replacing their diesel generator with solar panels.
In 2013, a first solar panel system was installed. It works well and has already allowed great savings, it covers 1/3 of the energy needs of the school.
That’s why today we want to do better and cover 100% of the school’s energy needs. Current electricity loads are extremely high and polluting (partly diesel generator). This will help lower the costs, to accommodate more students by employing more teachers.
In the interests of economy and ecology, it is also important for this school to lead the way in renewable energy.
A free vocational school for Dominicans 100% autonomous
Since 2004, a tourism school on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic has been created by Philaterra and Dominican partners. Tourism being the first economic resource of the country, Philaterra (formerly Cap Amitié) wanted to allow young people to enjoy the benefits of this sector and thus to train professionally.
Courses in foreign languages (French, German, English), bartender, waiter, receptionist, maid, accounting, computer, have been set up. A wide range of professional training is offered such as: sewing (creation of clothes, curtains and bed covers), kitesurf instructor, courses of electricians, plumbing, respect for the environment.
Participation in the course is free and the quality of the training provided by our partner INFOTEP (government institute for vocational training in the Dominican Republic).
Since 2008, the school is financially independent with a Dominican management and professors. The school is also a 44-room hotel that can host seminars and put into practice learning related to hospitality and catering. The expenses of the school are covered with the income generated by this micro enterprise.
924 students followed one of the 60 courses organized in 2017, totaling 5’842 hours of classes.
Reduce 3.6 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.
In order to cover 100% of the energy needs of the school, we want to install 78 photovoltaic solar panels with your help.
The total cost of the intervention is CHF 25’000.- (1’152’000 RD $), it includes:
• 78 Yingli Solar photovoltaic solar panels, class A, with a potential of 260W • 2 Solis inverters of 10Kwh each • Aluminum structure for panels • Installation
This installation will save around CHF 600.- per month. This saving will be directly reinvested in improving the school’s benefits.
It is a solar energy system with a capacity of 20KW that will reduce CO2 emissions by 3.6 tonnes each year.
If we take into account the gray energy required for their construction, over a lifetime of 25 years, only 21 years will be effective for the carbon footprint, a total saving of 75 tons of CO2.
