SOS Water Source Brazil
by Association Guapary, Pierre-Olivier Boillet, and FERREIRA CELIA
LET’S SAVE The Boa Vista water source For the purchase of land in Cezarina, Brazil where is the perennial water source
In 2013, we acquired deforested and degraded land 20 km from the town of Cezarina, State of Goiás, Brazil. With the help of a permaculturist, we started restoring the land, and were surprised by the permanent presence of surface water, even during the dry season. By studying the water table, we located the mouth of a spring, unfortunately located on an adjacent plot, upstream from ours.
We asked the owner of the land to protect this spring, which is constantly threatened by the trampling of cattle, which makes the soil gradually impermeable to rainwater, which runs off the surface and erodes the earth without penetrating deeply to regenerate the water table. Unconcerned about this preservation, the farmer offered to sell us his plot.
We would like to buy the plot through the Association Guapary Brazil, and that it be declared as a Private Reserve to benefit from the recognition of the National Water Agency, especially since, after analysis, the source has proven to be free of pollutants. We would be able to officially protect the source, the fauna and flora, and thus also preserve the quality of life of the local population.
As soon as the purchase is made, we will plant trees to restore the atmospheric water capture system, essential for supplying underground reserves.
My project is special because ...
We are also committed to reforesting a portion of the Cerrado savanna-forest, which is part of the Amazonian forest ecosystem and hosts 5% of the world’s biodiversity. About 1 500 animal species are recorded and 8 major watersheds have their sources in this region.
Future crops, such as cassava, pepper or bamboo hearts, will be packaged for sale by local villagers, which will provide them with additional income. Bamboo work, among other things, will stimulate local craftsmanship. In the more distant future, we would like to share this magnificent place, conducive to healing, meditation and the observation of animals in unspoiled nature, by building small bungalows raised above the ground
