Dear friends,
First of all thank you for supporting our Sprinter Aid project.
On July 21st we traveled to Greece with the unexpected amount of 16.000 Euros.
After having understood the camp’s functioning we invested this money in concrete projects and we were able to help thousand of refugees in 6 out of the 11 camps in Northern Greece, near the Macedonian borders.
Other than the financial support, we helped physically and morally. For instance, we built in the camp of Kalochori a cultural space. We transformed a very wild space into a habitable place, so people have the possibility to spend some time outside their tents.
Each camp is managed by the Greek army, in urgent situations. Everything is missing. As food, refugees are receiving since 4 months plain pasta with toast bread. Meat is distributed once a month. People are urgently in need of vitamines like vegetables and fruits. That’s why one of our investment was to provide vegetables for thousand of refugees, as well as mosquito repellent sprays, people are literally being devoured by insects.
In the attached infographic, we depict how your money has been invested and where. We were as well able to distribute some of these products ourselves tent to tent, like other humanitarian organisations do, and we realized how happy and thankful people were to receive donations.
In each camp, many humanitarian organisation are present, small ones like IHA ( www.iha.help) , to which we were allocated and other big NGOs like the IRC ( www.rescue.org).
Each donation and action help, in any scale or amount. Everything is urgent, sometimes even chaotic but incredibly useful.
A very part of our stay was the personal exchange we got to have with the refugees. In the 6 camps, we met a lot of Syrians, many of them spoke english, so we were able to communicate well. Grateful people, whom lives can be changed with a simple social interaction. Because of the lack of activities and having to stay all day long in their tents, any «unusual» event is welcome, they have no idea what awaits them.

Le 21 juillet nous avons pu partir en Grèce avec la somme inespérée de plus de 16’000 Euro!
Après avoir mieux compris le fonctionnement des camps, nous avons pu
investir cet argent dans des choses très concrètes et utiles pour plusieurs milliers de réfugiés dans 6 des 11 camps du nord de la Grèce, proche de la frontière de la Macédoine.
À part un soutien financier, nous avons aussi pu mettre à disposition notre aide physique. Par exemple, nous avons construit dans le camp de Kalahari un «cultural space». Nous avons ainsi transformé un coin sauvage en un espace extérieur habitable, afin que les gens aient la possibilité de pouvoir passer du temps en dehors de leurs tentes.
Chaque camp est géré par l’armée grecque, mais seulement dans l’urgence. Il manque de tout. Comme repas les réfugiés reçoivent par exemple depuis 4 mois uniquement des macaronis natures avec du pain toast. De la viande est distribuée qu’une seule fois par mois. Ils ont besoin urgemment de vitamines sous forme de légumes et de fruits. C’est pour cela que l’un de nos investissements a été l’achat de légumes pour plusieurs milliers de personnes. Ou encore de sprays anti-moustiques car les gens se font littéralement dévorer par ces insectes.
Nous avons représenté dans l’infographie ci-jointe les produits dans lesquels nous avons investi l’argent collecté.
Nous avons pu distribuer quelques-uns de ces articles nous-même de tente à tente, comme d’autres organisations humanitaires, et nous avons pu voir à quel point les gens étaient reconnaissants de recevoir ces produits.
Dans chaque camp il y a plusieurs organisations humanitaires présentes, soit des petites comme IHA (www.iha.help), à laquelle nous nous étions joints, soit des plus grandes comme par ex. le IRC (www.rescue.org).
Chaque action et donation aide, quelle que soit la quantité. Tout fonctionne dans l’urgence, c’est souvent chaotique mais quand même incroyablement utile.
Une part importante de notre présence sur place a aussi été l’échange personnel avec les réfugiés. Dans les 6 camps nous avons surtout rencontrés des Syriens, la plupart d’entre eux très bien formés, et nous avons pu très bien communiquer ensemble en anglais. Ce sont des gens très reconnaissants, qui était contents de chaque interaction social. Comme l’un des problèmes principaux est qu’ils n’ont pas d’occupation de toute la journée, ils doivent attendre un évènement à date indéfinie et ils n’ont aucune idée comment cela va continuer pour eux!!

Ganz herzlichen Dank an alle, die unser Projekt Sprinter Aid unterstützt haben! Am 21. Juli konnten mit der unerwartet hohen Summe von über 16’000 Euro nach Griechenland reisen! Nachdem wir das Funktionieren der Camps etwas besser verstanden hatten, konnten wir das Geld für mehrere tausend Flüchtlinge in 6 von 11 Camps im Norden von Griechenland – Nahe der Grenze zu Mazedonien – für ganz Konkretes und Nützliches einsetzen.
Neben der finanziellen Unterstützung konnten wir auch unsere physische Hilfe anbieten. Zum Beispiel bauten wir im Camp Kalachori einen «Cultural Space». Wir verwandelten einen verwilderten Fleck in einen bewohnbaren Aussenraum, damit die Leute die Möglichkeit erhalten, sich zur Abwechslung auch ausserhalb ihrer Zelte aufzuhalten.
Jedes Camp wird vom griechischen Militär geführt, jedoch nur notdürftig.
Es mangelt an allem. Als Mahlzeit erhalten die Flüchtlinge z. Bsp. seit 4 Monaten nur nackte Makkaronen mit pampigem Weissbrot. Fleisch gibt’s 1x pro Monat. Dringend benötigen sie mehr Vitamine in Form von Gemüse und Früchte. Somit war auch eine unserer Investitionen Gemüsekauf für mehrere tausend Menschen. Oder Moskitosprays. Die Leute werden richtiggehend von den Mücken aufgefressen.
In der angehängten Grafik haben wir visuell aufbereitet, wofür wir das gesammelte Geld ausgegeben haben.
Einige dieser Waren haben wir – wie andere Organisationen auch – mit Zelt-zu-Zelt-Distributionen selber verteilen können. So haben wir erfahren, wie dankbar die Leute um diese Dinge sind.
In jedem Camp sind verschiedene Hilfsorganisationen tätig, von kleinen wie der IHA (www.iha.help), welcher wir uns angeschlossen hatten, bis zu grossen NGO’s wie dem IRC (www.rescue.org).
Jede noch so kleine Handlung oder Spende hilft. Alles funktioniert in den Camps «von der Hand in den Mund». Oft chaotisch, aber eben doch unheimlich nützlich.
Ein wichtiger Teil unserer Präsenz vor Ort war auch der persönliche Austausch mit den Flüchtlingen. In den 6 Camps haben wir vor allem Syrier angetroffen, die meisten gut ausgebildet und mit Englisch konnte gut kommuniziert werden. Sehr dankbare Leute, die froh um jede soziale Interaktion waren. Denn eines der Hauptprobleme ist: sie haben den ganzen Tag nichts zu tun, sind auf unbestimmte Zeit am Warten und haben keine Ahnung wie es mit ihnen weitergeht!!
