What?

This is the Austrian premiere of Jane Coyle’s «The Suitcase», which is being staged as a guest performance at Dschungel Wien in a bilingual version.

About the content of the play: In Belfast, a recently deceased old man named Leo Edelmann looks back on the horrors the Nazis inflicted on his hometown of Berlin. While his daughter and granddaughter are cleaning out his house, they come across a battered suitcase that contains painful evidence of their family history. As the suitcase reveals its secrets, they uncover a bittersweet relationship between Leo and the young dancer Galina Stein from Vienna.

Shifting back and forth between the past and the present, a story unfolds about family and belonging, regrets about things left unsaid.

How?

The play was inspired by a real exhibit in the Jewish Museum Vienna and its story. The production aims to capture this as authentically as possible.

Therefore, we tell the story in a bilingual fashion: all scenes set in Vienna and Berlin in German, all scenes set in Northern Ireland in English, until the boundaries of time and place become blurred. Accompanied in each case by complimentary subtitles.

What For?

The money will mainly be used to pay for the venue rental, the accommodation for the performers and the printing of posters and flyers.
