The story of Tyalo Tyalo

We’re two friends from Lausanne (Yanis Carnal and Felipe Raupp) with unusual backgrounds: chefs, graphic designer and now winemakers, but above all we’re passionate about wine.

Having spent many years working in the restaurant and events sectors (Vins Vivants, Salon Desalpes), working with and helping winemakers, we embarked on our winemaking adventure in 2021. Following the creation of two micro-cuvées with a winegrower in Lavaux (J.C. Piccard) in 2020, we decided the following year to establish ourselves and found our own winery in St-Légier (Vaud) with a winemaker friend. We bought a lot of equipment together. Having started from nothing, without coming from a wine-growing family, we felt it was necessary to combine our strengths in order to share our experiences, as well as the expensive costs involved in fully equipping a cellar to press, vinify and age wines.

We produce artisan wines, all our grapes are destemmed by hand using a sieve and our juices pressed using a mechanical ratchet press. The vast majority of our wines are plot-based, single-varietal, and we try as far as possible to mature our wines in old barrels. All our grapes are organic and/or biodynamic, and we work without any added inputs or sulphites.

Since this year, thanks to our partner Marie-Jo, we have been learning and working alongside her on around 7,500m2 of organically-grown vines. The rest of our grapes, which are also certified organic, are bought and harvested each year from the same plots, so that we can work with continuity.

Convinced that wine needs time to mature, we keep our bottles as long as possible. We have just put our 2022 wines up for sale (at the end of April this year), which explains our current cash flow problems.

Why support us?

Our location had reached maximum production capacity, and our dear roommate wanted to expand his business, so he made the logical decision to relocate.

Following his departure, we need to separate and divide our equipment between the two entities. We also want to do some renovation work to make the cellar more functional and less back-breaking, as the floors are not suitable for pallet.

Your support will enable us to buy winemaking equipment, mainly: a press, cellar equipment (pipes, buckets, tools), vats, barrels, a pump, etc. It will also allow us to transform our space so that we can fit pallets in and no longer move everything by hand, sometimes several tonnes a day.

Unfortunately, our current financial situation does not allow us to cover these costs. After having invested all our savings and borrowed money to start this adventure, we are just beginning to sell our 2022 wines. As a result, we’re running out of cash, which is why we’re asking for your help.

Our contributions, apart from those listed as «support», correspond to the real value of whatever you choose. They will mainly enable us to have the funds we need to buy the equipment, carry out the work and possibly buy a vehicle before we start harvesting in mid-September.
