Moldova - Europe's poorhouse
Moldova, a country of the former USSR, has been independent since 1991 and is now considered the poorhouse of Europe. Although it is only three quarters the size of Switzerland, Moldova faces enormous challenges. After the end of communism, the economy collapsed.
During this difficult time, the country was often unable to pay wages; instead, salaries were paid out in the form of rice or wine. The resulting hardship forced many Moldovans to emigrate. Elderly people and children were often left behind, who, if they were lucky, were looked after by grandmothers or neighbours.
Many of the elderly people we met do not even know where their children are working now or how they are doing. With this pain and in deep loneliness, they live in the villages, often without running water and with an outhouse in the garden. We are building a new retirement home for these people in Cahul.
Together instead of lonely
Our donation project stands out because we are building a retirement home in the heart of the city instead of on the outskirts. This central location enables the residents to actively participate in city life and have direct access to cultural facilities, social meeting places and shopping facilities. Better public transport connections and easy accessibility for families and friends encourage regular visits and strengthen social contacts. This reduces isolation and improves the quality of life of older people. Our approach demonstrates our commitment to an inclusive community in which everyone feels comfortable and integrated.
In addition to the 40 places for pensioners, it will also offer training and further education opportunities for carers, kitchen and housekeeping staff, caretakers and others.
A warm home
Despite the challenges posed by coronavirus and other obstacles, we started construction in summer 2020. The building structure has now been completed and the building already looks attractive from the outside. Inside, however, there is still a lot to do. Our current focus is on completing the heating system by the end of the year so that the home is ready for occupancy soon.
We need your generous donations to build a new heating system in our retirement home. A modern heating system is essential to provide our residents with a warm and comfortable home, especially during the coming cold months. With your support, we can realise this important investment and ensure that all rooms in the retirement home are always cosy and welcoming. Every contribution helps us to create a safe and comfortable environment for our seniors.
