CD for These Troubled Times

by Dmytro Kokoshynskyy

Basel

In the dark times of the 16th and 17th centuries, music was considered a remedy for melancholy. This CD features works from that period and a contemporary Ukrainian piece linking the past and today.

The time has come!By Dmytro Kokoshynskyy, on 09/04/2026

Read update

Dear friends, colleagues, dear supporters,

A year has passed since you supported this project and since I wrote the last update. The time has finally come when you will be able to hear the fruits of this incredible endeavour.

I must say, I had no idea how surprisingly long a project like a CD can take – at least that was truly the case for me. It was in early 2023 that I started putting this project together, and here we are now, in April 2026, finally arriving at the end of this journey.

It will not happen all at once, though. I am writing this letter to tell you that tomorrow, on the 10th of April, the first single will be released, then a little later the second one, and then, in the middle of May, almost precisely 1 hour and 20 minutes of this truly incredible repertoire – including the phenomenal KHORA by Maxim Shalygin – will finally be out for you to hear.

To become melancholic, to get rid of melancholy, to be reminded of all that is happening around us in the world, or perhaps to forget about it for a little while – at least that is what I hoped this music could do, and how it has worked for me.

When the first single comes out, you will be able to find it on all my social media: Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. We are also preparing some very beautiful video materials: some complete pieces, some excerpts, and an interview. In time, all this will culminate in a short film that we are filming right now, in these very days, based on Maxim Shalygin’s KHORA. This is truly another extremely ambitious project alongside the CD, and I cannot wait for you to see it.

There will also be quite a few recitals with this programme, which I will be very happy to announce soon. I will write another update as soon as my website is back up and running and updated with all the concert information, and I will be very happy to see you among the dearest friends who follow my artistic journey.

In the coming weeks I should receive the physical copies of the CD, and as soon as that happens I will begin sending all that I promised to each one of you.

Again, your support was overwhelming and endlessly heartwarming, and without you none of this could have happened.

Thank you.

Yours truly, Dmytro Kokoshynskyy

Dear friends, colleagues, Dear supporters,

From the bottom of my heart – thank you.

I am incredibly grateful for your support of my project «Music for These Troubled Times.» Your generosity and encouragement made it possible to reach – and even surpass – the funding goal. Thanks to you, the CD will become a reality!

For those who are curious about more details on the CD: I’m very excited to share that last week I spent several days in Paris trying out various exceptional harpsichords. As you know, I had planned to record the CD on the remarkable transposing Ruckers copy by Émile Jobin. But now, I’m the recording will feature not one, but two instruments.

The second harpsichord is a truly exceptional copy of the earliest surviving English keyboard instrument, built by Lodewijk Theewes. While the original was a claviorganum, this copy – that was just restored by Julien Bailly – is a harpsichord with three registers (2 x 8’ and 1 x 4’), each with a distinct and beautiful tone. There is no harpsichords with such disposition in any country at that time. Moreover, the original instrument’s first owner was a friend of composers Thomas Tallis and William Byrd – whose music will be part of the program.

In the future I look forward to sharing the promised gifts with each of you. And if you’d like to stay updated on my future artistic adventures, you’re warmly invited to sign up for my newsletter at my website: www.dmytrokokoshynskyy.com

I’ll be sending news as often as I can – and I truly look forward to sharing the music with you.

With heartfelt thanks, Dmytro Kokoshynskyy
