Rediscover a 550-year-old music!
Guillaume Faugues was a French composer active between the 1460s and the 1480s. Only six masses for four voices remain of his compositions. Beyond his high-level musical technique, he anticipated, through his works, the composition techniques that his successors were to use extensively after him. Faugues’ mastery of composition came to the attention of Tinctoris, who compared him to Ockeghem or Dufay, among others, and established him as one of the representatives of the musical elite of the time.
In 2014, the Editions Musicales de la Schola Cantorum (Fleurier) are to release a new edition of Guillaume Faugues’ «Opera omnia», revised by Francesco Rocco Rossi, a musicologist who originally rediscovered Faugues’ works. In parallel, the project Concerts Faugues wishes to present the first modern performance of «Missa L’homme armé».
Two concerts are planned, on the 14th and 15th of November 2014, in La Chaux-de-Fonds and Peseux. The mass will be performed by a quartet of Italian professional singers, specialized in this kind of repertoire. Francesco Rocco Rossi will introduce every movement of the mass by a short presentation of its composition techniques. Finally, Le Papillon du Parnasse, a flutes ensemble from Neuchâtel, will perform various instrumental pieces of music to complete the program.
