Soloist Presentation – David Rey

Swiss trombone player, currently principal trombone of the Brussels philharmonic (Belgium), international soloist as well as founder of the Geneva Brass Quintet, David Rey is passionate of numerous areas of music. Some contemporary works or dedicated to him and he plays with numbers of brass band and orchestras as guest artist. Every year David organize a concert serie across Switzerland featuring along him young amateur musicians. At an early age, he started to teach. With 17 already, David was sharing his talent pursuing clinics and lessons in various music schools and academies, first locally and then internationally.

Recording of an album and International Premiere

David Rey wished to record a second opus in order to present the various musical collaborations occuring in his trombonist career, notably the one he cherishes with the «Geneva Brass Quintet«. This album aspires to be unique content wise by displaying various pieces arranged and written for trombone solo in a brass quintet. Belgian composer Wim Bex was commissioned a work therefore. David will put his virtuosity to serve a repertoire spreading from the late baroque until nowadays and doing so with an unexpected setting.

Details of the other Musicians

  • Geneva Brass Quintet: Years Ago, Liverpool had it’s Fab Four. Nowadays, Geneva has it’s own Fab Five. The members of the GBQ aren t yet the kings of pop music, but they aren’t shy to play «Penny Lane» with it’s high piccolo trumpet bits when appropriate. The Brass quintet refuses any kind of embellishment through sonorisation. Their exploits are only due to the breath of these five fellows, modulating from the smooth rustles of a balade to triumphal fanfares. The explorations of this ensemble remain eclectic. It is renaissance of Gabrieli, nor to lock oneself in the elitism of contemporary music. The expressive abilities of this family of instruments are so varied that they awake the desire to touch on all styles. However, the first prerequsite is always excellence. The favorite format of this chamber music the recital, with the aim to always meet their audience through well-thought-after shows. That being said, the possiblity exisits to enlarge the ensemble with an organ, choir or wind band. Symphonic orchestra accompaniment is also within the realm of possibility that they explore. It is common knowledge that brass, from which these instruments are made, is an excellent heat conductor. A renonwed conductor once said, «When the brass section intone a choral, it is like the sun succeeded piercing through a thick layer of clouds to heat up souls with his tempered rays.»

  • Wim Bex: At the age of ten, Wim Bex started to play the trumpet. Four years later, he swapped this instrument for a trombone. During his studies at the Lemmens Institute, he completed his training with a bass trombone. Currently he plays as a freelance musician for various orchestras such as La Monnaie, the Brussels Philharmonic, Hermes Ensemble, the Limburg Symphony Orchestra, l’Opéra Royal de la Wallonie and Flanders Opera. As a composer, Wim Bex is entirely self-taught and made a noticed entrance in the brass composers’ world with is famous «Vademecum» for bass trombone and orchestra described as a real input into the repertoire.
