Last week (March 16–18), I was traveling near Milan for my project -more specifically, to Villa Medici Giulini - to search for suitable historical keyboard instruments. While there, I had the opportunity to explore an impressive private collection of over 80 historical grand pianos and fortepianos. After this visit, I knew for certain that I wanted to record there. The following day, I visited the «Klingendes Museum Bern», where I was able to try out various historical bassoons. I was particularly impressed by an original Savary bassoon from 1825 - it’s a perfect fit for Mikhail Glinka’s trio. Afterward, I rehearsed with Sharon Prushansky in the atelier of piano restorer Toni Sulzener. A historic Bechstein grand piano was specially tuned to 438 Hz for this rehearsal, and I tried out my 1893 Heckel bassoon with it.
