Power of the Masses: What we want to move

We unite geography students from all over Europe at a congress, promoting intercultural dialogue on a scientific but also on an informal level. Our congress theme is «Power of the Masses». During our event we will work on current geographical and social topics such as migration, democracy, mass movements or climate change in workshops and on excursions. With this this scientific focus the participants will improve their global understanding for humankind and the environment. The workshops will be lead by carefully selected participants of the congress, who will gain valuable skills for the future. Congress participants will also hold scientific lectures.

Besides the scientific program, the General Assembly of EGEA (European Geography Association) also takes place at the Annual Congress. Through this assembly the participants actively shape the future of our international organisation.

For the first time the EGEA Annual Congress (AC) will take place in Switzerland: from 11th–16th September 2016 EGEA Zürich welcomes 160 participants in Melchtal OW, a remote mountain village in the heart of Switzerland. The opening ceremony will be held at the University of Zurich.

Become a part of our congress, too! In addition to your chosen reward you will get access to our congress diary where you can follow our activities during the event.

Power of the Masses: Why we need you

The participant fees only cover a fraction of our expenses: the students from all over Europe only pay a small fee, which is calculated according to their country of origin, in order to make it affordable for everyone.

In order to keep the travelling costs to a minimum, we take care of the transfer from Zurich to the congress location in Switzerland. Due to this, even with the support of our partners, we are still lacking the funds for excursions: in central Switzerland there are vast possibilities to experience geography, but the transportation costs are high. With your contribution you enable an exciting, varied programme for our participants.

In the spirit of our congress theme, we also view the campaign as a social experiment. Help us show that many small contributions can make something great happen and support our project: «Power of the Masses»!

Power of the Masses: Our team and organisation

We are a group of geography students and young alumni from the University of Zurich and members of EGEA Zürich. With our twelve-people orgateam and our numerous volunteers we accept the challenge to make an awesome annual congress for geographers from all over Europe happen.

EGEA Zürich is an entity of the European Geography Association, a network for geography students and young geographers. With about 100 members and a lively participation at Europe-wide EGEA events we are one of the biggest and most active entities.

The goal of EGEA, which counts about 5000 members in 39 countries at over 90 universities, is to create a network for students and young geographers and to promote intercultural dialogue within Europe.
