Who We Are

The Hafenkran in Basel – also known as «Goliath» – is a former industrial crane, gifted by Novartis to the canton of Basel-Stadt in 2017. Since 2022, it’s become a vibrant cultural and culinary hub along the Rhine in the Klybeck district. With its unique atmosphere and sweeping river views, it quickly turned into a beloved gathering spot for concerts, events, and long summer evenings.

This season, we teamed up with the Nordic fish crew at Fisk&Øl, who brought their flavour and flair to the lower part of the crane. Together, we kicked off the 2025 season with a fresh concept. But the Hafenkran was always meant to be more than just a party spot. We had big plans – from Pilates and brunches to a local flea market…

What Happened

department responded quickly – thankfully, no one was hurt. However, major parts of the structure and all of the culinary facilities were badly damaged. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The shock runs deep – we still can’t quite believe it. Not only was the entire lower level destroyed, but also the very heart of the crane. There’s currently no access to basics like electricity or water.

After a few days of processing, we made a decision: we’re not giving up. We want to do everything we can to bring this special place back to life – for our community, and with our community.

This is what we need backing for.

The fire didn’t just end our season overnight – it left us with heavy damages to infrastructure and equipment. Yes, we are insured – but unfortunately, coverage will only cover around half of the costs. To get the Hafenkran operational again and open the gates as soon as possible, we urgently need your support to help cover:

Repairs to the crane’s structure Restoring electricity and water supply Technical equipment and back office needs Glassware, bar gear, and operating materials Kitchen equipment like fridges, ice machines, etc. – much of it was destroyed New storage and service containers Safety upgrades, like additional CCTV – this will be essential going forward And: new events, open to all, just like before Every contribution brings us one step closer to rebuilding the Hafenkran – and keeping this one-of-a-kind space alive for the people of Basel.
