Who we are:
The Kunsthalle Zürich presents contemporary and emerging art. We are continually experimenting with the concept of art and playing with the limits of the classical art exhibition. For example within the exhibition «The Playground Project» we transform our spaces into a giant playground. However we are not just concerned with playing – we want the exhibition to set a symbolic example for a city with more playgrounds. The exhibition is temporary though and when we take down the playground in mid May nothing more than a memory will remain of it. Therefore we want to design, write and conceive a book containing the most beautiful playgrounds in the world.
Why playgrounds?
Between 1950 and 1980 the playground was a creative laboratory. In the cities of industrialized nations innovative, mad, interesting and exciting projects emerged: Landscape architects, artists, activists and ordinary citizens wanted to provide the best available playing spaces for children and in doing so to also re-think the very notions of community and city. Today, in Zürich and elsewhere, there are increasingly few really great playgrounds. We here at the Kunsthalle Zürich think: this has to change!
Why a book?
With numerous previously unpublished images «The Playground Project» publication illuminates this former inventiveness once more so that we can let ourselves be re-inspired by it today. The publication examines the eventful history of the playground between education, architecture, art and politics. In-depth texts acknowledge the most important figures, many of who are forgotten today. With contributions by Marjory Allen (Lady Allen of Hurtwood), Joseph Brown, Riccardo Dalisi, Richard Dattner, Aldo van Eyck, M. Paul Friedberg, Alfred Ledermann, Alfred Trachsel, Group Ludic, Egon Møller-Nielsen, Palle Nielsen, Isamu Noguchi, Josef Schagerl, Mitsuru (Man) Senda and Carl Theodor Sørensen.
We have collected the images and written the texts but to print the book we need your support. Help us to finalize this amazing project!
Warum ein Buch?
In zahlreichen bisher unveröffentlichten Bildern bringt die Publikation «The Playground Project» den damaligen Ideenreichtum zurück – damit wir uns heute davon inspirieren lassen können. Die Publikation erklärt die wechselvolle Geschichte des Spielplatzes zwischen Erziehung, Architektur, Kunst und Politik. Vertiefende Texte würdigen die wichtigsten Akteure, von denen heute viele vergessen sind.
