Help us promote a movie about wool upgrading

Greetings to you, web adventurer

Did you know that Switzerland’s sheep population could produce yearly around 1,000 tonnes of wool? Yet we only collect an average of 290 tonnes per year. The rest is thrown away, or sometimes even burnt (spoiler: it doesn’t burn well).

Does that surprise you? Does it annoy you? Well, it stroke us. A lot. Because wool can be used to make so many things: not just clothes, but also fertiliser, mattresses, insulation panels… In fact, it tickled us so much that we decided to make a little documentary film about it. «The Sleeping fleece».

We’re Marion, who started out as a print journalist specialising in social issues, before moving into broadcasting and becoming an image reporter for Valais television (but she’s still writing, she just can’t give it up). She loves animals (especially those with manes and hooves), walking in the mountains and… dark chocolate.

Then there’s Hugo, who’s also an image journalist for Valais television and happy to direct whenever the opportunity arises. He loves ice cream parlours (not the kind that sell ice cream), the mountains in general and lost causes!

What’s this film about?

We set out to meet the men and women who, outraged by this state of affairs, decided to shake things up. From the small artisanal spinning mills to the breeders who join forces to supply the big companies, this is an epic tale of the yarn industry in French-speaking Switzerland. And you’ll see that it’s not all about balls of yarn after all. «The Sleeping fleece» is also a film to reflect on our relationship with local resources, the living world and the ties that bind us together.

But don’t get us wrong: producing and promoting a film costs money. For this first attempt, we decided not to pay ourselves. On the other hand, we called on other talented people, and we’d like to be able to put their work to good use, even if they also agreed to help us on a voluntary basis. And then, now that the film is finished, everything begins! Communication, festival registrations, organising round tables, administrative work, and so on…

So we need you, and all your relations!

Why do we need support?

Supporting «The Sleeping fleece» means highlighting journalistic work that is rooted in the French-speaking part of the country, as well as local skills (local music, editing and graphics!).

Above all, it means supporting a project that highlights an issue that is certainly regional, but also universal as it points out the absurdity of our global consumption. Furthermore, the loss of value of wool is a problem common to many regions of Europe.

Last but not least, it’s a film that meets some brilliant people who are working hard to change things… And that feels good!

What will your support be used for?

In practical terms, the money raised will be used:

  • To pay the small hands that generously worked on the production of this film, from editing to graphics and music.
  • The costs involved in showing the film at festivals, cinemas and events related to the issue of wool recovery (registration, transport, equipment hire).
  • Administrative and communication costs related to the film.

And to top it all off, we’ve got some great (and very fluffy) rewards for you, which you can find on the right of your screen!
