The project

The Sonatas by Dmitri Shostakovich we have chosen for our new CD are wonderfully profound and endlessly exciting works, with heartfelt melodies as well as many amusing surprises. The viola sonata is his last work, which he struggled to put down on paper. The fragile and melancholic atmosphere has made it one of the most frequently performed works for viola. The powerful, even crazy violin sonata, on the other hand, is hardly ever performed. We were fascinated by these contrasts.

We have found distinguished partners for this CD in the German label Genuin and the sound engineer Alfredo Lasheras Hakobian. Genuin are as keen on this project as we are, and wish to bring out the recording as early as May. To make the most of this prospect we now need your support. For musicians, bringing out CDs is as important as ever. But nowadays it is left to us to cover the high costs. This is why we are taking what, for classical musicians, is the novel step of asking for your help.

The initiators

Duo TschoppBovino : Two Artists – Three Instruments

The Duo TschoppBovino has received praise by the press for its «eminently cultured dialogue» as well as for its «colourful flow, formal alertness, agile and nuanced dynamics and delicate accents». Since their very first concerts, the two musicians have captivated audiences with intelligent and exciting programs. Their joint concert activity has taken the Duo to important venues, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Rudolfinum in Prague and the Ljubljana Philharmonic.

Mirjam Tschopp performs equally as a violinist and viola player and has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician with, among others, Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Mandelring Quartet in major concert halls. Her affinity for recent music has led the only prize-winner of the Rostal Viola Competition in 2000 to perform numerous premieres, including the violin concerto dedicated to her by Nicolas Bacri under the baton of Semyon Bychkov. She has also recorded Saygun’s violin and viola concertos. She was a professor at the Konservatorium Innsbruck and currently teaches at the Musikschule Konservatorium Zürich.

Riccardo Bovino studied piano in Basel and completed his education with conducting studies with Dennis Russel Davies at the Mozarteum Salzburg. His preference for chamber music and singing leads him to collaborate regularly with such artists as Jennifer Larmore, Sol Gabetta, Daniel Behle, Reto Bieri, the Quartetto di Cremona and Hanspeter Blochwitz. He performs in major concert halls and was a guest in some of the most important music festivals. A lecturer at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern, he has made numerous recordings.
