We're crossing the Atlantic!

We are 12 young people from the FOSsailing project, which is run by the Vereinjugendprojekte association. With two Shuttle 31 catamarans that we built and refurbished ourselves 20 years ago, we want to embark on a challenging journey across the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean.

We will set off in October 2025, sailing from Sardinia to the Canary Islands. From there, we will sail across the Atlantic with the trade winds at our backs to the Caribbean. There, we will spend three months getting to know the different islands and cultures before heading north of the Caribbean Islands across the Atlantic, past the Azores, back to the Mediterranean and finally home.

The project idea was born about three years ago when four female skippers from the association’s youth project developed the vision of another Atlantic crossing during a trip in the Mediterranean. As the older generation of active association members is slowly retiring due to family and work commitments, a breath of fresh air is needed. The Transatlantic project aims to train new female skippers and inspire them to take up sailing so that they can actively lead trips in the future, enabling many young people to enjoy affordable adventure weeks in the Mediterranean.

FOSsailing’s first Atlantic crossing took place back in 2007. The results were extremely positive: in addition to strengthening the club’s media presence, the personal development of the participants was particularly impressive. Now it is time to rewrite history.

We are 12 young people between the ages of 20 and 36, most of whom met through this project. Over the past year, we have planned, laughed and faced up to the many challenges that such a project entails. Now we are facing one of the last major hurdles before we can get started: financing.

The realisation of the project involves high costs, which we cannot yet cover entirely ourselves due to our young age. Many of us are still studying or in training, and some have just finished school. That is why we hope that this crowdfunding campaign will cover at least part of the financial deficit, and we are incredibly grateful for any support.

We are aware of what a great privilege it is to have the opportunity to undertake this journey at all. With your help, we want to make the most of this adventure – and share our experiences and what we have learned with the young people who come to our association in the future.

What makes our project special

A journey that will not only teach us how to sail, but will also be a school for life. With very little, we will cross half the world, get to know nature at its wildest and learn about ourselves and each other. We will then bring what we have learned back to the club with a breath of fresh air, thereby strengthening club life.

This is what I need backing for.

The project is currently financed by 54% participant contributions and 31% sponsorship funds. Unfortunately, this is not yet sufficient to cover the high overall costs associated with such a project.

The largest expenses include the overhaul of the ships, safety equipment for the Atlantic crossing, the participants’ personal sailing equipment, port fees, expense allowances for the skippers in charge, food on board and insurance costs.

With this crowdfunding campaign, we would like to at least partially offset the existing deficit. Every contribution – large or small – brings us one step closer to our goal and makes it possible for our adventure to start in mid-October. 🌊⛵️
