A PIONEERING CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL PROJECT IN AUSTRIA

ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS THE WIENER CHORO KLUB, THEN THE WIENER CHORO ENSEMBLE. OUR MOTTO: #CHORO IST ANDERS*

The Wiener Choro Ensemble is the musical showcase of the Wiener Choro Klub, a pioneering project in Austria, whose main objective is to disseminate and teach Brazil’s first urban music: the Choro. The Wiener Choro 5tet was born from this musical movement under the artistic direction of Antônio de Pádua and Marco Antônio da Costa. Its repertoire explores the richness of Choro, Jazz and Brazilian classical music.

Founded in 2019, the Wiener Choro Klub has three main objectives:
1) Mediation towards institutions throughout the history of Choro which is a bridge between Europe and Brazil ; 2) Teaching through music workshops; 3) Promotion through the organization of concerts, choro rodas (jam sessions) and the Festival;

WHAT IS CHORO?

Resulting from the fusion of European classical music and dance (waltz, polka, quadrille) and African rhythms (batuque, lundu), the Choro musical genre is the first Brazilian urban music born in 1870 in Rio de Janeiro. This musical genre originally developed in the living rooms, where it was played by musicians who took up European dances such as polka or waltz, played to the syncopated rhythms of Afro-Brazilian dances. Considered the «Brazilian Jazz» for its improvisation and virtuosity, Choro is based on dialogue between different performers and between different timbres and is practiced in orchestras (called «regional» in Portuguese) and in roda (circle in Portuguese) where musicians of all levels play together.

  • #CHORO IST ANDERS - Our motto refers to the links between the city of Vienna and its history (birthplace of classical music) and the Choro musical genre which has been influenced by European baroque and classical music (waltz, polka).

CD «VIENA BRASILEIRA»- WIENER CHORO ENSEMBLE

THE CD «VIENA BRASILEIRA»: DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE TRADITION OF EUROPEAN CLASSICAL MUSIC AND THE MODERNITY OF BRAZILIAN MUSIC

The CD «Viena Brasileira» reveals the diversity of the authentically Brazilian Choro genre (which celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2020) and puts it into perspective with European classical music.

WHAT IS THE MUSICAL PROPOSAL?

The musical proposal highlights the creation of original works by the composers (João Vítor, Antônio de Pádua & Marco Antônio da Costa), as well as a tribute to the classics of the Choro repertoire (via the title «Seleção Waldir» in homage to Waldir Azevedo (1923-1980)). Given that the Choro genre allows infinite rhythmic, melodic and harmonic possibilities with elements of classical music, it requires a high level of technical mastery on the part of the instrumentalists. Moreover, Choro is also a musical genre which, like jazz, brings artistic freedom of individual, collective and improvised expression. The project brings together Brazilian and Austrian musicians and adds different rhythms and trends. The result is an extraordinary creative sound experience.

SUPPORTING COMPOSERS IN TIMES OF PANDEMIC

The compositions show a strong link between the Brazilian musicians, their life in Austria and the local music scene. For example, the composition «Choro Buchengasse» is an ode to the Viennese neighborhood of Favoriten (10th district), where the musicians reside. The piece «Primeiro Estudo» by Benedito Costa shows the connection between baroque music and samba. Finally, the composition «Natal em Viena» by João Vítor (18 years old) combines the traditions of the musicians’ hometown with the Christmas markets of Vienna. This album is full of exciting stories between Europe and Brazil !
