We need to and we can act fast to reduce the levels of GHG causing the climate crisis!
The Philippines is one of the most vulnerable countries to human induced climate change, with a heightened risk of extreme weather, be it typhoons, floods, landslides or draught.
We, Cecilia and I – the founders of LimaDOL, are seeking your support for a final push to show how our nature based solution to reducing green house gases from landfills in the Philippines is ecologically, socially and economically sustainable.
Climate change is caused by the increase of Greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere. Methane, one of the most potent GHG, has accounted for roughly 30 per cent of global warming since pre-industrial time. (source UNEP web-site). A U.N. report published in May 2021 found that immediate reductions in methane emissions is the best, swiftest chance the planet has at slowing climate change.
One of the sources of methane are landfills, when organic wastes such as food waste decomposes anaerobically. This turns landfills into one of the major sources of methane.
In Davao, the city where we live and operate, more than 500 MT of food waste goes to the landfill every day. This is caused by a lack of segregation at source, and lack of separate collections and a lack of infrastructure to up-cycle food waste.
But there is an innovative circular economy solution – that helps reduce the methane, whilst providing jobs and creating value. And we are proving it !
By using the Larvae of Black Soldier flies (found in nature in the Philippines) we can, in just 12 days, up-cycle food scraps from the community into valuable products – Frass (compost) to fertilize and enrich our soils and feeds for animals (insect larvae).
This will help communities to divert their food scraps away the landfill – thereby avoiding methane production.
And will provide the farmers with environmentally healthy alternatives – Frass/compost to re-vitalize their soils, insect protein to produce healthy and tasty chicken and fish.
A nature based solution that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable
Since May 2021 – we have invested our family savings to develop and adapt this innovative technology to the realities in Davao. In 2024 alone (up to November) we can claim to have avoided the equivalent of 140 tons of CO2.
Our great team has a technical proof of concept that works: we take in 500 kg/day of food scraps a day and – and produce 150 kg of frass/compost and 75 kg of insect larvae.
Our long term ambition is to divert 150 tons food waste a day equivalent of 90’000 tons of CO2 equivalent a year (approximately 75 flights of an A380 between Switzerland and the Philippines – 35’000 passengers)
Give us a final push and we can prove our solution is economically sustainable
To be able to expand and have this great impact we need to close the circular economy loop.

Each ton of food waste that ends up in the Landfill emits 930 Kg of CO2 equivalent as methane. Your contributions help us divert tons of food waste (each 100 francs helps us divert 1 ton).
It will also help us present our two great products (the compost and the insect protein as feeds) to farming communities (cooperatives) and backyard gardeners who produce healthy vegetables and chicken, so that we can close the circular economy loop, and continue to upcycle more and more food waste in the years to come.
You may want to consider your contribution as CO2 compensation. According to Myclimate.ch, on average each European should reduce their carbon footprint by 6.6 tons a year.
