What it’s about
The practical course is part of the finals of the Biology Olympiad, a competition for students whose interest in biology goes beyond the school curriculum.
In three challenging rounds, we search for the best young biologists in the country. During the national preparation and final weeks, participants gain valuable experience, make new friendships, and have the chance to qualify for the International Biology Olympiad.
One highlight of the finals is the molecular biology practical course, where about 20 students independently apply modern methods. They copy genes using PCR (polymerase chain reaction), construct plasmids with Golden Gate assembly, transform bacteria, and make them produce fluorescent proteins – causing them to glow in different colors!

What makes us special
We complement school education: For over 20 years, our association has been teaching young talents beyond the standard curriculum. We offer curious and gifted young people a place to learn and a network of like-minded individuals. This is important: Parents and schools often lack the resources to provide targeted support for young talents.
Aliyah, a 2024 participant, shares: «This final week will stay in our memory for a long time. We also appreciate the friends we made during this rather short but intense time.»
Our focus is learning with and from peers. Participants support each other throughout the Olympiad, exchange feedback, and form new friendships. Additionally, they benefit from courses taught by volunteers – mostly young students who are just a little older.
We are a free program. Your donation allows young people to dive deep into modern biology and gain valuable hands-on experience. Your contribution not only funds this practical course but also helps make the entire final week of the Olympiad an unforgettable experience.

Why we need support
This practical course, as well as the entire Biology Olympiad, is organized and conducted by volunteers. To make the practical a success, we need materials, including: enzymes for DNA modification and amplification, chemicals for molecular biology experiments, laboratory consumables, food for all participants and volunteers.
Help us inspire the next generation of scientists – and make bacteria glow!
