An open source watch movement to participate in

Inside every wristwatch, the hands are driven by a device called a movement. Normally, it’s coming in a convenient ready-made package from big manufacturers. The watchmakers creativity is limited to the final assembly of the watch.

To enable individual design and to support know-how outside of large companies, openmovement, a non-profit organization from La Chaux-de-Fonds - the heart of swiss watchmaking - has constructed the world’s first mechanical movement based on the principle of open source: It is called OM10. The 3D files of the movement can be downloaded for free.

After more than 6000 hours of voluntary work, we have produced perfectly working prototype watches, that were financed by the members of the association and generous donors.

That's why we need your support

To take the next step of openmovement we now need the support of the crowd. We want to produce the components of the OM10 movement in larger quantities. This requires expensive manufacturing tools. We are talking about accuracies of a few thousandths of a millimeter. Your contributions will be used for these tools and to start the production of parts kits.

With the finished parts kits, independent watchmakers, designers and interested people around the world can then build their own movements - or have them built - and thus apply and expand their expertise. They will provide the ’proof of concept’, the proof that our idea can be realized: collaboration enables individual creativity.

What's special about our project

On the movement of ONE of the twenty prototype watches, we will engrave all the names of you, the supporters of openmovement, in miniature form. There is space for over 1000 names.

This unique prototype watche will become part of the collection of the International Museum of Watchmaking in La Chaux-de-Fonds. And will travel the world to be exhibited in other watch museums that would like to display it.

Be part of the global openmovement community and engrave your name in the history of watchmaking. Let’s drive innovation together and celebrate open and shared know-how!

Thank you!
