Making in the City of Lucerne
For 115 years, things have been «made» at Industriestrasse 15. Where bitter lemon and tonic water were once produced, and later lighting design and events took their place, a workshop collective and affordable space for arts and crafts is now taking shape. In this way, «Machi Indu 15» creates a space for mutual inspiration, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the promotion and networking of arts and crafts. It also sees itself as a testing ground for sustainable designs and local business models. The association addresses a specific need: affordable workspace for machine-intensive arts and crafts is virtually unavailable in the city of Lucerne in a central and visible location. The project creates this infrastructure on a permanent and community-supported basis, embedded in a cooperative housing development with a long-term perspective. The planned communal space will facilitate public activities such as pop-up events, markets, exhibitions, lectures, and regular get-togethers. In this way, the premises will be opened up to the public, shared with others, and offer a glimpse into artisanal processes in an authentic workshop atmosphere.
About us
«Machi Indu 15» is organized as an association and consists of four workshops with eight artisans who not only work in their own studios but also actively promote the arts and crafts: as course instructors, university staff, and through their own educational and research projects. «Machi Indu 15» is thus not merely a studio space, but a place where craft culture is practiced, passed on, and made accessible to the public. This creates a new, sustainable cultural space for Lucerne at Industriestrasse 15.
Ceramics Workshop with:
Annick Bosson is an artist and educator whose work spans ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, drawing, as well as performance and theater projects. She is a co-founder and co-organizer of the «Fragil – Ceramics Market» at Neubad Lucerne, which has been held annually since 2020.
Cornelia Gassler has been working as a freelance material designer since 2019, experimenting, researching, and designing primarily with ceramics. She develops and designs tiles for stoves, bathrooms, and kitchens and is conducting research at HSLU in the Product + Textile research group, collaborating with brick manufacturers on a green facade system. Since 2025, her freelance work has been focused on a practice-oriented PhD project on the reuse of mineral waste.
Seraina Müller is a ceramic artist who has been running the «seramics studio» in Lucerne since 2021, where she creates handmade objects on the potter’s wheel and by hand. Her works are produced as one-of-a-kind pieces and in small series, characterized by a keen sense of materiality, form, and everyday aesthetics. Since 2024, she has been sharing her skills in her own workshops.
Goldsmiths with:
Katrin Kunz is a trained goldsmith and has been running her label «Die Eisenhand» with her own workshop in Lucerne for 16 years. As a lover of antique shops and flea markets, she is fascinated by the history and significance that accumulates over generations in worn jewelry. She crafts all her pieces by hand from start to finish, including both series and one-of-a-kind items. Katrin is also a co-organiser of the craft market ’Das Herz in der Hand’.
Textile workshop with:
Eileen Good is an industrial designer who combines precise craftsmanship with experimental material research in her work. She is interested in social issues as well as communication and exchange, and is collaborating with Laura on the «Knitternet» project, a digital platform dedicated to preserving the culture of Swiss Passap knitting machines. She has been part of the «Textilosaurus» textile studio since 2025
Laura Schwyter is a trained dressmaker and textile designer. In 2021, she founded the studio and workshop «Textilosaurus,» where textile crafts are practiced, researched, taught, and promoted. She shares her knowledge through courses, creates custom-made pieces, and collaborates with other designers. Together with Eileen, she is conducting research on the «Knitternet» project.
Shoemaking with:
Jule Schumacher is a shoemaker with a master’s certification and her own label. Her professional career has taken her through custom shoemaking workshops, theaters, and vocational schools. Locality and sustainability are core values for her: She works with local leather from the Tempikon organic farm in Baldegg and developed a local watch strap for a watch factory in Biel. When Jule isn’t in the workshop, she steers tour boats across Lake Lucerne.
Veronica Fischer earned her Higher National Diploma in Footwear Design in London. After gaining experience in design studios and custom shoemaking workshops, she has been dedicating herself once again to the craft of shoemaking since 2021 and, as a shoe designer, experiments with traditional and contemporary shoe creations.
This is what we need backing for
The past 115 years have taken their toll, and the building is in urgent need of interior renovation. To get work up and running again at the «Machi,» we need to carry out some structural work. Specifically, this means:
-
A wall of windows to let more light into the rooms: 1 Machi Medal funds 1 m² of window (we need at least 35 m²)
-
Walls for a new layout: With a tea towel, you fund 1 m² of wall (out of approx. 210 m²)
-
Doorways cost money too! With a key ring, you fund one.
-
Lighting that enables precise and safe working: This is where the Ehren-Macher:in and Möglich-Macher:in are needed.
-
Electricity for all our machines: As a socket sponsor, you fund a new socket installation for us.
-
Hot water and water connection: Five knitted scarves enable us to lay a water pipe.
-
Various repairs: The sanitary facilities, goods lift, floor and windows would also be grateful for any donation – as they have been rather neglected over the last few decades.
Your support enables us to partially fund the renovation, and in doing so you help us to:
- Provide affordable studio and workshop space in Lucerne
- Promote arts and crafts and sustainable, local production
- Create a community infrastructure for interdisciplinary collaboration
- Raise the profile of craft culture and communicate it to the public
THANK YOU <3<3<3
