Architecture helping the battered world get back on its feet

Lisbeth Sachs (1914–2002) is considered one of the first and most influential female architects in Swiss architectural history. Based on the publication «Lisbeth Sachs – Architektin, Forscherin, Publizistin», which was published in German in 2020, the translation into English offers the opportunity to make her life and work known internationally. The occasion is the project of the «Annexe» group of young female architects. They will create inside the Swiss pavilion at the Architecture Biennale in Venice a built homage to Lisbeth Sachs’ life and work. The book «Lisbeth Sachs – Animate Architecture» will be presented at the opening from May 8 to 10, 2025 and will also be available in bookstores from then on. Just as I have completely examined Lisbeth Sachs’ extensive estate kept at the ETH and written the German edition of the book, I am participating in the creation process of the English edition free of charge. Furthermore, I do not make any financial profit from the sale of the book.

Sachs' Buildings as Spiritual Forerunners of 21st Century Architecture

Lisbeth Sachs was one of the first Swiss women to obtain an architecture diploma from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1939. She started her career with a bang: in October of the same year, the newly qualified architect won the competition for the new building of the Kurtheater in Baden, which was inaugurated in 1952. Another highlight of her professional life was the art hall that she created for the second Swiss Exhibition of Women’s Work (Schweizerische Ausstellung für Frauenarbeit, Saffa) in 1958. The venue for the presentation of painting, arts and crafts, sculpture and architecture, divided into three pavilions, was the only building in the show that was originally intended to be preserved. In the 1970s, Lisbeth Sachs’ creative work was considered as «a step towards helping the battered world back onto its feet» and predicted that buildings by her would be rediscovered in the 21st century as spiritual precursors. This is exactly what is happening today, as the group of young female architects «Annexe» is presenting an interpretation of the Saffa art gallery in the Swiss Pavilion at the Architecture Biennale in Venice from May to November 2025.

Sachs' work is worth being recognized internationally

In order to make Lisbeth Sachs’ creative universe accessible internationally, I need support for the printing - translation, proofreading, graphics. This will promote the topicality of her holistic, organic approach. It relates to the sensitive integration of architecture into the landscape and the use of ecological materials. It includes the rise and fall of the built world as well as the biographical vicissitudes of the inhabitants of her «workshops for life» or tailor-made spatial dress or costume. With your help, you will not only help to bring Lisbeth Sachs’ work into the world, you will also be rewarded with attractive recognition.
