What it's all about / De qué se trata
(EN) «Feiern. Veladas» is the first volume of the «Trilogía de la V», a project that combines photography and writing based on the concept of «vacation». In the last ten years I have collected more than 800 photographs at different flea markets in Austria, Spain, Germany and the USA. With them I have created a collection of three thematic books, each with an introductory text in German and Spanish by Juan Evaristo Valls Boix.
(ES)»Feiern. Veladas» es el primer tomo de la «Trilogía de la V», un proyecto que combina fotografía y escritura a partir del concepto de «vacancia». En los últimos diez años he recopilado más de 800 fotografías en diferentes mercadillos de Austria, España, Alemania y EE.UU. Con ellas he creado una colección de tres libros temáticos, cada uno de los cuales cuenta con texto introductorio en alemán y castellano de Juan Evaristo Valls Boix.
Concept / Concepto
(EN) This first volume brings together images of festivals and celebrations, the second groups together photographs taken on outdoor excursions, and the last focuses on recreational bathing.
The term vacation etymologically alludes to emptiness in various ways, whether invoking lack of content, dispensation from a position, inoperability or wandering. This evocation of what is empty is reflected in the title of the project and its chapters, which play with the phonetic indistinction between /v/ and /f/ and reproduce the sound of a deflating balloon. Photographs of leisure and free time have constituted, for as long as the medium has existed, a social effort to construct a collective imaginary of freedom, spontaneity and improvisation. Their practice is motivated by the eagerness to render decipherable an essential experience that the logic of productivity has taken away from us: the experience of doing nothing, of having no destination, no origin, no assigned task. It is precisely at this moment, in which the pandemic has placed work in the private sphere, that these images represent more than ever the idea of dissidence and paradise lost.
In this way, this photobook elaborates a poetics of inaction based on the refusal of the production of meaning or work. It understands that art becomes political when it is capable of interrupting narratives or undoing symbols. The photographs could explain, function or work, but they simply prefer not to: they are holiday images. This happiness of dead times and unoccupied forms is also our dissidence, an opportunity for critique in the laborious contemporary world.
(ES) Este primer tomo reúne imágenes de fiestas y celebraciones, el segundo agrupa fotografías tomadas en excursiones al aire libre, y el último se centra en el baño recreativo.
El término vacancia o vacación alude etimológicamente al vacío de diversas formas, sea invocando la falta de contenido, la dispensa de un cargo, la inoperosidad o el deambular. Esta evocación de lo que se vacía se refleja en el título del proyecto y sus capítulos, que juegan con la indistinción fonética entre /v/ y /f/ y reproducen el sonido de un globo que se deshincha. Las fotografías de ocio y tiempo libre han constituido, desde que existe el medio, un esfuerzo social por construir un imaginario colectivo de la libertad, la espontaneidad y la improvisación. Su práctica viene motivada por el afán de volver decible una experiencia esencial que la lógica de la productividad nos ha arrebatado: la experiencia de no hacer nada, de no tener destino, ni origen, ni tarea asignada. Es precisamente en este momento, en el que la pandemia a colocado el trabajo en la esfera privada, que estas imágenes representan más que nunca la idea de disidencia y paraíso perdido.
De este modo, este fotolibro elabora una poética de la inacción basada en el rechazo de la producción de sentido o de obra. Entiende que el arte se vuelve pol tico cuando es capaz de interrumpir relatos o deshacer símbolos. Las fotografías podrían explicar, funcionar o trabajar, pero sencillamente prefieren no hacerlo: son imágenes de vacaciones. Esta felicidad de los tiempos muertos y las formas desocupadas es también nuestra disidencia, una oportunidad para la crítica en el laborioso mundo contemporáneo.
