This is what it's all about.

Our goal is to protect green turtles from poaching on the beach of Ndroudé in Grande Comores.

Predation, marine pollution, global warming and poaching… for these reasons, the green turtle is on the red list of endangered species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Since 1983, poaching has added to the many existing threats affecting the survival of green turtles, leading to a 66% decline in their population in 2001. Although these practices have been banned since 1991, protection measures are still lacking to stabilise Green Turtle populations in the long term. For this reason, the Swiss Cetacean Society-SCS (Société Suisse d’étude et de protection des cétacés), founded in 1997, has been working since 2010 with the pioneering environmental conservation NGO in the Comoros, Ulanga Ngazidja. Many beaches in the Comoros Archipelago are known to be important nesting sites.

Our project is special because ...

Between 2011-2013 the two partners (SCS and Ulanga Ngazidja) had already set up a surveillance of turtle nests on this beach thanks to local ecoguard patrols. After 7 years of absence, the patrols were finally able to resume, for a period of one year. In order to ensure the stability of the green turtle populations, which have been weakened over the last 40 years, it is therefore important that the surveillance of this area continue in 2021 and 2022.

The aim of this project is to set up monitoring of green turtles and their nests by four ecoguards, who will patrol the beach of Ndroudé alternately day and night.

This is what we need backing for.

The monthly salary for the eco-guards is CHF 100, which means that we will have to finance an annual salary for our four eco-guards of CHF 4,800.

In addition, this project also aims to finance the stay of our project leader in the Comoros in order to consolidate our excellent collaboration between the two partners and to supervise the project on the spot for a few months.

Your contribution to this project will not only help to abolish the poaching of green turtles in the Comoros but will also promote employment for the local population. The funds raised will enable this project to start in mid 2021 and continue until the end of 2022.
