Our mission is to fight hunger and food waste. 1/3 of all the foods in Switzerland is being wasted. We save food in good condition that would've been wasted by retailers to local people in need.

This is what it's all about.

In Switzerland, 1/3 of all food is wasted - that’s 330 kilograms per person per year!

In the Swiss wholesalers alone, around 100,000 tons of food waste are produced every year. Around 95% of this could be avoided! The majority of this «waste» falls into the category of «unsold food», i.e. due to oversupply, storage and transport. The production of the lost food causes the same amount of CO2 as 36% of all cars in Switzerland - or corresponds to 6 bathtubs full of water per person per day!

These are food products that are actually fit for consumption. And that’s where Thanksgiver comes in:

Tafel strives to avoid unnecessary waste while helping people in need. Every week, we receive food from various retailers that would otherwise end up in the trash. We use this to provide food for around 300 people who are unemployed or in financial need for other reasons. Through our work, we have already been able to save over 105 tons of food in the last two years! Thanksgiver thus makes a considerable contribution to the sustainability and health of people and the environment.

My project is special because ...

Thanksgiver manages to combine sustainability, food waste and social work with its work. Thus, Thanksgiver manages to help people in need and at the same time reduce food waste and thus also fight for sustainability.

This is what I need backing for.

We have already been able to accomplish a lot in the two short years and yet we are only at the beginning! The queue of people requesting support from us seems endless. Unfortunately, due to lack of capacity, we cannot accept more food donations - and therefore cannot help all people. Therefore, in order to expand, we need your help!
