Maison Verte creates a nettle gin

What do we want? Not only have we developed a unique nettle syrup and an exquisite nettle liqueur, but we have also created creative products such as chairs and shoes made of nettles - Amazing what? Now we are on the verge of a new milestone: we want to produce the Maison Verte Nettle Gin.

Who are we? Behind MAISON VERTE is a young and dynamic team that uses the nettle plant as a meaningful resource for people and nature to create product as well as material innovations. Our designs are made for a generation that is aware of its resource consumption and wants to rethink and reshape it - for a progress that equally and equally benefits man and nature. We would like to take you with us on our journey.

Why the nettle? Apart from the fact that nettles have an incredibly great aroma, are rich in important nutrients (for example, they have more than twice as much vitamin C as oranges) - this plant is also an ingenious resource in terms of sustainability. Easily accessible, local, fast and easy growing, resistant, already available in large quantities and incredibly important for local biodiversity. Over 30 native butterflies live and eat on nettle. In terms of insect mortality, nettle fields are a very important part of our environment.

What is special about our project

Maison Verte wants to establish the nettle as a new material and product resource. Together with the renowned Turicum Distillery in Zurich, we have developed a high-quality nettle gin. The result is a tasty, unique and incomparable gin - with the stinging nettle as the defining figure. Taste it yourself and you will understand what we mean! Besides nettles, botanicals such as rose petals, meadowsweet, lemon balm and tonka beans are used to round off the gin. However, we don’t just want to use nettle as a gin botanical. Our goal is to establish this ingenious plant in various sectors such as Food&Drinks, Health&Beauty, Fibre&Textiles and Packaging Material&Insulation. There are many good economic and ecological reasons for using the nettle plant as a resource. (1) It is a sustainable and renewable raw material. (2) The nettle is a perennial plant. (3) It does not need fertilisers and pesticides. (4) No additional water is needed as rainwater is sufficient. (5) The cultivation of nettles promotes the local diversity of flora and fauna. (6) There is a high cultivation potential in different areas, which enables regional production. (7) Nettle can improve soils overloaded with nitrates and phosphates. (8) It can be grown on land that is unsuitable for food production. (9) The nettle contains numerous valuable nutrients. (10) Its fibres as well as the stalk have extremely interesting and promising properties, which are suitable for the production of robust fabric, for example.

Together with the furniture company Vitra and the Institut auf dem Rosenberg, we were able to obtain a prototype of a Vitra Physix Chair (by Alberto Meda) with nettle fibres. In this way, we were able to show that it is also possible to use sustainable materials for office furniture and to do without synthetic fibres.

For this we need support

Now we are ready to produce the gin! However, we are still a small start-up and completely self-financed. For the past three years, we have been reinvesting any earnings in new product developments. Producing a local gin requires significant financial resources, more than we have been able to raise so far through the sale of our syrup and liqueur. Crowdfunding is intended to enable us to finance this in advance. We would like to invite you to get to know us better and to accompany us on our journey. With your support, we can continue to finance our heart’s project. Help us, taste, give feedback and look forward to even more ingenious nettle products. «Nettles never grow alone, they grow in groups. The plants form a net underground that spreads over whole areas. In this network of side shoots, nodes are formed from which the plant shoots up again and again. This vegetative reproduction of the nettle ensures a progress that cannot be stopped so quickly.»

We also want to create such a network. Every «plant» that stands out from our network spreads our vision. Every person who becomes aware of Maison Verte is a root of our network that can continue to grow. Become a nettle root too and help us spread our vision. Important for you to know: How is the funding goal made up? Raw material procurement, production of the gin, bottles, labelling, storage, packaging, legal fees as well as necessary clarifications and tests. If you need more detailed information or have any questions, please send us an e-mail: info@maisonverte.studio. You are cordially invited to join Maison Verte in a future full of exciting, rosy and exciting times, with many appealing products and innovative ingenious materials waiting for us! Let’s go! Order your gin! Order syrup! Order nettle salt :)
